Golf may need fewer institutions, not fewer golf courses

Royal Aberdeen Golf Club and the neighbouring Aberdeen Ladies Golf Club -- two separate institutions sharing the same Balgownie links -- are now formally one club: members voted in late August 2026 to integrate, and the change took legal effect on 1 September 2026. It's a small, specific merger. It's also a clean test case for a question UK club golf will keep running into: is the real constraint course supply, or duplicated institutional structure?

The SmartGolfHub Brief

Golf's commercial economics, direct.

The stories behind the deals, the sponsorship shifts and the numbers that matter — before they're old news. One email. No noise.

About SmartGolfHub

Smarter golf. Smarter marketing.

Golf is the most under-monetised premium industry in the world.

Tee sheets are full. Revenue per member has barely moved in a decade. Equipment brands outspend their audience's attention and still run boring campaigns. Tours depend on broadcast rights while their best distribution sits on Instagram. Developers pour nine figures into new resorts and market them like a local club. The industry is cash-rich, content-poor, and allergic to modern growth practice. SmartGolfHub exists to fix that.

— A commercial growth partner, built by operators.

What we actually think

Five beliefs that shape every piece of work.

01

Most golf brands underestimate content. They treat it as a cost centre. It's a distribution advantage. The brands that get this will take the market.

02

Most content in golf is boring. Product shots, swing sequences, and ‘passion for the game’ don't move a P&L. Entertainment does.

03

Distribution beats production. A great post no one sees is a private hobby. A good post engineered for reach is a business.

04

Golf is massively under-monetised digitally. The audience, the affluence, the brand adjacency — all there. What's missing is the operating system.

05

The biggest opportunity is modernising how golf is marketed. That's the wave. We're riding it. If you can see it too, we should talk.

Four pillars. One accountable team.

Bought together or stacked as a full growth engine. No handoffs. No black boxes. No "let me check with the team."

Five conversations. One common language.

Commercial.

Golf Brands

Equipment, apparel, tech. You have product. You need demand. We build the content engine and the commercial layer around it.

Clubs & Resorts

Tee sheet is full. P&L isn't. We grow membership value, non-green-fee revenue, and owner returns.

Tours & Bodies

Distribution is the new broadcast deal. We modernise how tours reach and retain the audience that funds them.

Media & Creators

Audience is the asset. We help creators turn reach into revenue — sponsorships, IP, products.

Startups in Golf

D2C, tech, events, experiences. We shorten the distance between idea and traction in a traditional category.

Built by operators. Run like one.

SmartGolfHub is led by entrepreneurs and operators who have built, scaled, and sold businesses across golf, sport, media, and property. We don't write decks and leave. We sit inside the P&L until the numbers move. We work internationally from the UK, with a deep focus on Europe and the Gulf — the two markets where the next decade of golf growth will be won. If you're serious about turning golf into a commercial engine, we should talk.
